III theme awards £1.5million in grants

The BRC’s Inflammation, Immunity and Immunotherapeutics (III) theme has awarded £1.5million in grant money across 15 research projects.

Funds awarded include £51,000 to Dr Alastair O'Brien to look into repurposing of simvastatin as an immune-restorative therapy in advanced liver disease; and £75,000 to Prof Sergio Quezada and Dr Paul Mulholland to map the immune landscape to develop novel therapies for glioblastoma.

Awards are for directly incurred costs until March 2021 and proposals submitted had to demonstrate how they aligned with the objectives of the III theme, which include:

  • Identification and validation of targets for novel therapies
  • Validation of biomarkers and novel functioning imaging to assess responses to novel therapies
  • Delivery of novel therapies (including drug development, drug re-purposing, cell & gene therapies, regenerative medicine) in proof of concept clinical trials.
