Lab hosts needed for school students from disadvantaged backgrounds

The in2science UK scheme, which will allocate 300 lab placements to school students from disadvantaged backgrounds, is looking for researchers to host A level students this summer.

In a bid to encourage students to take up a much wider range of STEM careers, the scheme is now looking for lab technicians, as well as PhD students (who receive 5 points for their research log), scientists and post docs, to host placements.

The scheme gives students, most of whom are on free school meals (FSM) and have no family with higher education, the opportunity to work alongside scientists for one or two weeks with the aim of inspiring and motivating them in their university applications. The project has had a huge impact with 58% of in2scienceUK participants progressing on to Russell group universities, compared with the national figure of just 5% of FSM students.

Supervisors will have minimal paperwork as in2scienceUK takes care of all health and safety documents, inductions, access cards, insurance and students’ travel and expenses. Students will also be tasked with their own project, as well as some reading and writing tasks.

This year, the BRC is sponsoring 50 student placements across UCL.

If you, or someone in your lab would like to offer a placement, please complete the online form. Please contact Leanne Grech leanne@in2scienceUK.org if you have any queries.
