90% of UCLH research participants would take part in research again

Nine in ten patients taking part in research at UCLH would consider doing so again, according to a national survey on participants’ experience in research.

The annual Patient Research Experience Survey (PRES) from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) for 2022/23 also found:

  • 97% said research staff always treated them with courtesy and respect.
  • 84% said the information they received before taking part in research prepared them for their experience.
  • 90% said the researchers valued their participation.

345 patients at UCLH took part in the survey in the 2022/23 year (up from 229 in 2021/22). Participants had taken part in studies in areas including cancer, neurology, infection, haematology, reproductive health and children’s health.

For 76% of the people surveyed at UCLH, it was the first time they had taken part in a research study.

UCLH and the NIHR use results from the annual survey to ensure patients have the best possible experience while taking part in research.

The UCLH Research Directorate encourages all research teams to routinely offer participants the chance to take part in the survey.
