Award for our BRC Director for outstanding contribution to research and the NHS

Congratulations to UCLH Director of Research Professor Bryan Williams who has received the President’s Award from the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) in recognition of his outstanding and enduring contribution to the RCP, the NHS and medical research.

The award was presented to Prof Williams earlier this month by RCP President Dr Sarah Clarke, at the highlight occasion of the RCP year, the annual Harveian lecture which was delivered by UCL alumnus and former Government Chief Scientific Advisor Sir Patrick Vallance.

In the RCP citation prior to the presentation of the President’s Award, Prof Williams was recognised as a distinguished researcher and clinician, and a global leader in his clinical and research field. He was recently cited by Clarivate as one of the world’s most influential and highly cited clinical scientists, with his research directly influencing clinical practice in the NHS and globally. Throughout this time, he has continued to work for the NHS, recently completing 40 years as a front-line NHS doctor.

The RCP particularly noted his key work in leading the development of the national early warning score (NEWS) and driving its system wide implementation in the NHS to improve the response and outcomes of patients with acute clinical illness or deterioration – an innovation credited with saving many thousands of lives and now widely deployed by many other health care systems globally.

It was also noted that Professor Williams will soon take up the role as Chief Scientific and Chief Medical Officer at the British Heart Foundation.
