Grant to extend evaluation of stroke service

A major award has been granted to UCL researchers by the National Institute for Health Research Health Services and Delivery Research (NIHR  HS&DR) to extend the evaluation of stroke service reconfiguration.

Over the past few years stroke services in London and Greater Manchester have gone through key changes, with the aim of providing better care to stroke patients. A team of researchers at UCL, King’s College London and The University of Manchester, led by Prof Naomi Fulop from the Department of Applied Health Research and Management at UCL, have been evaluating these changes to see which of the new models of stroke care show the best clinical and cost-effective improvements.

The NIHR HS&DR programme has now awarded additional funds of £397,886 to extend the project. This will let the team study further changes currently taking place in Greater Manchester, and to study the reconfigurations of stroke services that are now beginning in the Midlands and East of England. The project will run until 31 March 2016, with a total value of £892,047.

It is anticipated that lessons will be generated on the outcomes of major systems change that may be applied to a wide range of care settings and communities.
