There is clear evidence for an association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and periodontitis, according to a clinical review by Professor Nikolas Donos.
In a systematic review published in PubMed Professor Donos, Head & Chair of Periodontology and the Director of Clinical Research at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, calls for periodontal diagnostic procedures to be routinely carried out in MetS patients. He argues that the factors influencing this should be investigated by longitudinal and treatment studies.
A total of 20 studies were included in the review, following an initial search of 3,486 titles.
