Medics heroically swap three livers in 18 hours

BRC funded research was behind the success of Royal Free surgeons who completed 18 hours of life saving surgery.

Off duty staff rushed to the Royal Free Hospital to complete three life-saving liver transplants – two of which were for ‘super-urgent’ emergency cases. Each operation took between eight and 12 hours.

Professor Pollok, clinical lead for liver transplantation, said: “I would like to express my pride in what we achieved for our patients and their families, who put their trust in us. It feels good to be part of a team with such tremendous spirit.” Surgeons who carried out the procedures also run the BRC supported Tissue Access for Patient Benefit biobank at UCL.

The Royal Free is the fourth busiest liver transplant centre in the UK, having carried out 104 procedures in 2016/17.
