PPI workshops throughout autumn

Registration is now open to sign up for workshops on involving patients and the public in research.

The first two workshops are for researchers and will be run by PPI experts and trainers Bec Hanley and Derek Stewart. The third workshop is for lay people working with researchers and will be run by senior managers at the UCL/UCLH Joint Research Office.

Experience matters: An introduction to patient and public involvement in research: This workshop is for UCL and UCLH biomedical researchers new to PPI and provides a practical and realistic introduction to the different ways patients and the public can be actively involved in the research process. Please note this workshop focuses on the active involvement of lay people in the design and conduct of research. It is not about recruiting volunteers to trials. The session covers the different stages in which patients can be involved, identifying and addressing barriers to PPI, the kinds of support researchers can access, and how to make sure PPI works for everyone. The aim is to build up researchers’ understanding of PPI, help researchers get started with PPI and enable people to share ideas and experiences.

There is no charge for attending this course, however a £50 non-attendance fee will apply if you fail to inform organisers 48 hours before the workshop if you wish to cancel your booking.

When: 10am-4pm Monday 27 October

Where: Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health, 170 Tottenham Court Road , London W1T 7HA, 1st Floor, Seminar Rooms 1 & 2

Setting up a patient group: Some researchers have found that gathering a small group of people together who have direct experience of the condition that is being researched can help provide insight. This workshop is for all researchers who are considering setting up or keen to develop an existing patient group.

There is no charge for attending this course, however a £50 non-attendance fee will apply if you fail to inform organisers 48 hours before the workshop if you wish to cancel your booking.

When: 2-5pm: Friday 7 November

Where: Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health, 170 Tottenham Court Road , London W1T 7HA, 1st Floor, Seminar Rooms 1 & 2

A half day workshop for lay people: Researchers actively involving patients or the public in their research (not as trial participants but in the design and conduct of research) can invite their lay colleagues to attend this course. Objectives of the course will be to give lay people an idea of the complexities of the research process, to explain research jargon and explain the timeline of research processes. It’s important to stress that this workshop is only for lay people who have already been enlisted to be actively involved in research and it is not for people who are going to be trial participants/volunteers.

The course is free however researchers are recommended to cover travel expenses for their patients/lay people. The course is not open to the public, only to patients/lay people who have already been enlisted to help on a research project.

When: 2-5pm:  Thursday 11 December

Where: Boardroom, 1st Floor, Suite A, Maple House, 149 Tottenham Court Road, London W1T 7DN
