Researcher honoured for contribution to tackling TB

Sir Alimuddin (‘Ali’) Zumla has been honoured with the Union Medal for exceptional contributions to tackling tuberculosis and other lung diseases around the world.
 
The medal is  accorded by The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease to individuals “who have made outstanding contributions to the control of Tuberculosis and Lung diseases by their scientific work and actions in the field’’.
 
BRC-supported Sir Ali is Professor of Infectious Diseases and International Health at UCL and consultant infectious disease physician at UCLH. Sir Ali holds an NIHR Senior Investigator award. He is also co-director of the UNZA-UCLMS Research and training network and is Principal Investigator of the PANDORA-ID-NET (Pan-African Network for Rapid Research, Response, Relief and Preparedness for Infectious Disease Epidemics) consortium.
 
Sir Ali accepted his medal via a pre-recorded speech.
 
His work to bring together scientists, politicians, civil society groups and more to tackle infectious diseases including TB and lung diseases spans over 30 years.
 
The award comes shortly after Sir Ali had convened a historic meeting between members of the PANDORA-ID-NET consortium and the Director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Protection at Chatham House in London where plans were developed for outbreak response and research capacities across the African continent.
