Our impact

At the NIHR UCLH Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), we translate cutting-edge science into real-world benefits for patients and the NHS. From early detection and new therapies to digital innovation and inclusive research, we are transforming the way care is delivered.

Prevention and early detection

Our research drives earlier diagnosis and prevention, improving health outcomes and reducing the impact of disease across communities.

Better treatments and patient care

We develop safer and more effective therapies that put patients first - improving care, recovery and everyday quality of life.

Transforming healthcare through innovation and technology

From digital/AI to new medical devices, we turn ideas into practical solutions that make healthcare smarter and more efficient.

Making healthcare accessible and inclusive for all

We involve diverse communities in research to reduce health inequalities and make healthcare fairer and more inclusive to everyone.

Boosting the economy

Our partnerships attract investment, create high-value jobs and turn discoveries into products that benefit patients and strengthen the UK economy.

Research that shapes policy

Our evidence guides national decisions and public policy, helping shape a fairer and more effective healthcare system for all.

Developing our NHS workforce

We build research capability by supporting staff development, training and leadership.

Bibliometrics analysis of UCLH BRC Themes

In May 2021, the UCLH BRC carried out an analysis of Web of Science publications to illustrate the performance and ranking of the UCLH/UCL partnership in each of the Research Themes that are being proposed in the 2021 competition for BRC designation and funding.

We have used three rigorous methods of categorising research publications as indexed in Clarivate's Web of Science (WoS) and InCites Core Collection, for the period 2011-2018. We created thematic filters to survey the ~14M publications, using; WoS Search Terms; WoS Categories (determined by the publication’s journal) and WoS citation topics. For each theme, we noted the record count for the top 100 institutions, and UCL's global and UK rank. This analysis was further validated by the UCL Research Excellence Framework analytics team. This showed that for all 14 of our proposed themes, UCL ranks in the UK top 3, with 12 of 14 ranked number 1. This is consistent with the NIHR/RAND theme-based analysis in 2016.
