UCLH Data Science Fellowship Programme

The UCLH Data Science Fellowship Programme is developing the capacity of clinicians and NHS analysts to use modern data tools, particularly R, to manipulate and analyse hospital generated data.

The program started in 2021, funded by the UCLH charity. Clinicians and other staff members can apply to have half of their time funded for a year. During the year, fellows work on a project with a clinical and academic supervisor and are supported to use modern data science tools. The first cohort of fifteen fellows have completed their year and Cohort 2 has just begun (Aug / Sept 2022).

Entry level training is given in modern data good practice, including R, SQL, and the five safes framework. Fellows are mentored to apply this new learning in their own projects. The aim is also that the fellows use of hospital data will help to improve the systems to provide it, creating a virtuous cycle of data improvement and use.

We intend to make available educational resources available more generally to UCLH staff with the aim of improving data science skills and data literacy more generally in the organisation.

The fellowship program is led by UCLH consultants Dr Steve Harris and Dr Wai Keong Wong.

Dr Timothy Roberts would act as the lead tutor and data science educational supervisor for this programme.
