NIHR increases payment rates for public involvement in research

The NIHR has increased its payment rates for public involvement in research by 10%.

NIHR-funded and NIHR-supported researchers who work in partnership with patients, service users, carers and communities are expected to apply the new rates from this point forward, following the NIHR announcement on 16 December.

Payment rates vary depending on the nature and level of involvement, for example contributing to funding application reviews or helping to shape study design. Under the updated guidance, payments for public involvement range from £13.80 to £495.

NIHR said in the same announcement that payment rates for public contributors will be reviewed every three years.

Professor Lucy Chappell, Chief Scientific Adviser to the Department of Health and Social Care and CEO of the NIHR, said: “Public involvement is an NIHR priority and improves the relevance and quality of our research. That is why it is so vital to recognise those who use their experiences to shape life-changing NIHR research. This uplift is a signal to the system that the NIHR acknowledges the importance of those who shape research across the UK.”
