Data science

Through the Data Science cross-cutting theme, we have roll out the CRIS (Clinical Record Interactive Search) system and CogSTACC, to build a research electronic health record across all UCL Partners’ mental health services.

The database will be a key strategic asset to develop quantitative imaging as a diagnostic marker and will benefit from ongoing work of the dementia theme on quantitative imaging in Alzheimer's disease.

Our achievements so far include:

  • We have established an IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) North Central and East London Service Improvement and Research Network with data on over 400,000 patients and 95% plus completed outcome data. We are looking the impact of age, gender and ethnicity of patient outcomes along with service level factors and using this to inform prognosis (e.g. depression as a prodrome or a modifiable risk factor for dementia).
  • We were awarded an MRC Pathfinder grant to improve CRIS data quality and increase linkage with HES (Hospital Episode Statistics) and ONS (Office for National Statistics) Mortality data. Looking at, among other things, efficacy and safety of antipsychotics in the management of self-harm in personality disorder and the safety of antipsychotics (in terms of prolactin level and QTc interval) in patients with serious mental illness. North Central London STP are supporting the roll-out of CRIS across North London mental health trusts and to link with primary care and social services data.
  • We are leading/contributing to international consortia on psychiatric genetics (The Psychosis Endophenotypes International Consortium and the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium). Analysis of shared heritability in common disorders of the brain. Genomic Dissection of Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia, Including 28 Subphenotypes.
  • We have implemented i-THRIVE, an evidence-based transformation of CYP MH services from diagnosis to need. Over 60% of services now claim to be based on THRIVE principles and it found its way into the LTP.
