Patient & Public Involvement

The Division of Psychiatry hosts the Service User Research Forum (SURF), a team of service-users who are actively involved in research projects.

All of our Theme board meetings are attended by members of the North London SURF Group. The North London SURF was founded in 2005 and comprises 20 members with experience of using NHS secondary care mental health services in North London. Based in the Division of Psychiatry at UCL and co-Chaired by Katherine Barrett (service user) and Professor Helen Killaspy, both members of the mental theme board.

The Theme now funds SURF meetings and the costs of SURF members’ involvement in developing research proposals prior to them receiving funding. SURF are proactively collaborating with UCL’s Centre for Co-Production. The personalized medicine sub-theme routinely includes SURF members as co-applicants/collaborators in grant applications.

The pharmacoepidemiology group has established a data science PPI group. The MRC Pathfinder grant includes data science PPI collaborations with the McPIN foundation.
