BRC researchers recognised as ‘World Experts’

BRC Director Professor Bryan Williams has been recognised as a ‘World Expert’ in hypertension (high blood pressure) by the US-based medical website Expertscape which placed him in the top 0.1% of experts in his field.

The website already places several other UCLH/UCL researchers in the same category, including Prof Alimuddin Zumla for tuberculosis, Prof Nick Fox for dementia, Prof Richard Watt for oral health, Professor Joanna Zakrzewska for Trigeminal Neuralgia and Prof Judy Breuer for Herpes Zoster.

The announcement in relation to Prof Williams coincided with National High Blood Pressure Education Month (May 2019) in the US.

Expertscape ranks researchers and clinicians according to the quantity and quality of their publications in the medical literature between 2008 and 2019.

It places the most importance on the publication of guidelines, and Prof Williams – who is Chair of Medicine at UCL and Director of Research at UCLH – chaired the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines task force for the latest ESC and European Society of Hypertension guidelines which came out in 2018.

Professor Williams said: “I’m delighted to be recognised in this way, and to see that so many UCLH and UCL colleagues are listed in the same way for their respective subject areas. This demonstrates the breadth and depth of the talent we have at our world-leading hospital and university – and is one reason we are able to offer high quality care to patients.”
