Everest study now taking on healthy volunteers

BRC-supported researchers are looking for healthy volunteers to take part in a trek to Everest Base Camp as part of research into human performance at extreme altitude.

The trek is a continuation of research at Everest led by UCL scientists which looks into hypoxia (shortage of oxygen). The aim is to improvethe care of critically ill patients and other patients in whom hypoxia is a fundamental problem.

Bookings are now being taken for the Xtreme Everest 2013 medical research trek. Xtreme Everest 2, as the expedition is called, is taking place from March to May 2013 and is 23-day expedition to Everest Base Camp at 5,300 metres (17,225 ft).

All participants will take part in experiments in the Himalayas, having completed base line tests in the UK. The results will be used to benefit clinical care worldwide. This trek builds on previous research expeditions carried out by the team.

The trek costs £2,565 and includes return flights from the UK to Kathmandu and requires an additional £500 contribution to the scientific research. Anyone over 18 is eligible and it is suitable for people new to trekking or for more experienced walkers wanting to visit the Himalayas.

Candidates should be healthy and have a good level of overall fitness, ideally being able to walk with a light rucksack for up to eight hours a day in normal conditions.

The trek includes a thorough programme of acclimatisation, a possible ascent of Kala Patar with views of Everest and three nights at Everest Base Camp. The trek will be organised by British company Jagged Globe, the mountaineering specialist.

Places will be offered on a 'first come, first served' basis, subject to passing medical screening. The team will be particularly targetting identical twins, as well as a small group of 'repeaters' - those that trekked with Xtreme Everest in 2007.
