Spotlight on future of UCLH and UCL research at BRC launch event

An event to mark the launch of a new BRC term looked ahead to the future of research at UCLH and UCL and how our research teams will continue to drive forward advances in care.

The event, held this week at the Wellcome Collection, showcased our research across areas including neurology, infection, haematology, and digital health – with patients sharing the stage with researchers to say what difference research had made to them and their families.

Event attendees watched a short video on the impact of UCLH and UCL research, and a series of presentations focussed on ongoing and future work including:

  • the development of exciting new gene therapies for neurological diseases and other conditions
  • efforts to transform the way imaging and other medical technologies detect disease
  • the extension of innovative CAR T-cell therapy for cancer to more patients including those with solid tumours
  • the importance of data enabled research.

UCLH Director of Research and BRC Director Prof Bryan Williams outlined how the BRC’s strategy, structure, and most importantly people will enable UCLH and UCL to transform patient outcomes, safety and experience through research.

Prof David Lomas, UCL Vice-Provost (Health), highlighted the scientific expertise that underpins UCL and UCLH research, and how this is enabled by the strong partnership between the two institutions.

And UCLH Chief Executive David Probert, closing the event, spoke of the importance of our research to patient care, and how important our research is to the success of the NHS.

The event also included a key note presentation from Prof Lucy Chappell, Chief Scientific Adviser to the Department of Health and Social Care and CEO of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

It was an NIHR award of over £90 million at the end of 2022 which enabled the new BRC five-year term, and Prof Chappell said the BRC at UCLH and UCL is a key part of the NIHR’s mission to transform the health and wealth of the nation through research.

Alongside the video for the event, the BRC produced a magazine outlining future plans for research. And photos and summaries of presentations from the event can be found via the BRC Twitter account.
