UCLH/UCL CBRC investigators honoured in awards

UCLH/UCL CBRC investigator Professor Derek Yellon is one of 23 eminent national researchers to be honoured with the status of National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Senior Investigator in the latest round of NIHR appointments. Professor Yellon’s UCL colleagues Professor Jadwiga Wedzicha and Professor Peter Fonagay, were also awarded NHIR Senior Investigator status. Professor Deenan Pillay, Director of the CBRC, was one of 15 existing Senior Investigators to be reappointed. NIHR Senior Investigators are made up of some of the nation’s most outstanding researchers. They are selected through an annual competition. Appointments are made according to criteria of quality and volume of internationally excellent research; its relevance to patients; and the public; impact on improvements in healthcare and public health; impact of their individual research leadership; engagement of patients and the public and engagement of healthcare policy makers and planners with their research. The total number of NIHR Senior Investigators is maintained at 200. Professor Yellon is Professor of Cellular Cardiology, based at the Hatter Cardiovascular Institute. Professor Wedzicha is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at UCL and Professor Fonagay is Freud Memorial Professor of Psychoanalysis and Head of the Research Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology at University College London. Professor Pillay is Professor of Virology at UCL, Head of the Research Department of Infection, and Director of Research for UCL Partners
