Working with partners, the collaboration is supporting programmatic approaches to primary care research, aligned to both local and national priorities.
Initial areas of focus include:
- Respiratory health
- Cardiovascular disease and metabolic health
- Mental health and neurological conditions
- Diseases of the ear, nose and throat
These areas reflect:
- West and North London Integrated Care Board (ICB) clinical priorities
- Existing UCLH BRC research themes and portfolios
- Areas where primary care is central to prevention, early diagnosis and long‑term management
Examples of Current and Emerging Work
Through this collaborative model, partners across NCL are already supporting and developing:
- Delivery of complex interventional studies in community settings that would traditionally be hospital‑based
- Participation in large platform and population‑based studies, including prevention and early‑intervention research
- Use of centralised database searching to support participant identification across practices
- Innovative approaches to remote consent
These examples demonstrate how joint working can increase research reach, relevance and impact.
Commitment to Inclusion
Improving equity of access to research is a shared priority across the partnership.
The PCRUs and supporting teams actively focus on:
- Recruiting participants that reflect local population profiles
- Engaging communities experiencing health inequalities
- Reducing practical, cultural and digital barriers to participation
This work supports the broader NHS and NIHR ambition to widen participation and improve the relevance of research.
