Patients and the public

There are several ways members of the public, patients and carers can support research, whether by participating in research, being involved with researchers and designing new research or helping to raise awareness of research through public engagement.

  • Participation in research refers to taking part in a study..  Each year hundreds of patients and members of the public take part in a wide range of studies at the NIHR UCLH Clinical Research Facility.  Without their willingness and support, the valuable research could not take place. To find out more about research you may be able to take part in visit Find a Study or Be Part of Research webpages.
  • Public involvement in research means research that is done ‘with’ or ‘by’ the public, not 'to', 'about' or 'for' them. It means that patients or other people with relevant experience contribute to how research is designed, conducted and disseminated.
  • Public engagement, is when information and knowledge about research is shared with the public.

If you would like to find out more about new research projects, about helping to raise awareness about research or about public involvement, please add your contact details and areas of interest to this short survey.

The NIHR UCLH CRF Management Group are looking for at least two Lay Representatives to join the group.  This would be an ideal opportunity to provide an independent  public perspective to the group and contribute to discussions on the activities and priorities of the NIHR UCLH CRF.
