BRC programme director awarded honorary DSc

Professor Derek Yellon has been awarded an honorary DSc by the University of Cape Town.

The BRC Cardiometabolic Programme Director accepted his award this week for his research into the mechanisms underlying the phenomena of myocardial ischaemic-reperfusion injury and cardioprotection.

Professor Yellon has been Professor of Molecular & Cellular Cardiology at UCL since 1993 and has made an impact on clinical cardiology worldwide. He has published more than 450 papers and edited 22 books.

He has enabled collaboration between academic institutions in the northern and southern hemispheres through the Hatter Cardiovascular Institute and the longstanding collaboration between UCL and the University of Cape Town.

Professor Yellon said: “I was truly honoured to receive a DSc degree from the University of Cape Town – it was a wonderful occasion which was made even more poignant as the whole graduation ceremony was dedicated to the memory of President Nelson Mandela – his wife, Graca Machel,  being the Chancellor of the University of Cape Town.”
