100 researchers gather for BRC cardio conference

Researchers from around the world gathered last week to hear about the latest developments in cardiometabolic disease as part of a BRC conference.

‘Challenges and innovations in cardiometabolic disease’ was held at the Royal College of Physicians and had almost 100 attendees.

The event was chaired by Professor Mark Cooper, Chief Scientific Officer of the Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute in Melbourne and honorary Professor of Medicine at Monash University and the University of Melbourne; and Professor Keith Fox, Chair of the Programme of the European Society of Cardiology and International Associate Editor of the European Heart Journal.

Professor Sir George Alberti, Chairman of King’s College Hospital and President of the International Diabetes Federation, started the day detailing global trends in cardiovascular medicine.

BRC Director Professor Bryan Williams spoke about his research into the pathogensis of vascular disease in diabetes and aging; Professor John Deanfield presented his research which shows that the prevention of cardiovascular disease starts before birth; Professor Steve Humphries discussed the possibility of implementing genetic testing for cardiometabolic disease; and BRC Cardiometabolic Programme Director Professor Derek Yellon presented on protecting the diabetic heart.

Professor Cooper and Professor Fox will act as external programme assessors with a report planned for submission in the coming months.
