Funding available for researchers to co-produce research with patients and the public

Researchers and healthcare professionals can apply for between £10,000-£15,000 to co-produce research with patients and the public.

The UCL Centre for Co-production in Health Research announced the funding for the second round of co-production pilot projects following successful completion of the first round of pilots which ended in December 2018.

The deadline for applications for the current round of pilots is 14 June 2019.

Traditionally, researchers have designed studies without the involvement of patients and the public, but the UCL Centre for Co-production is working to challenge this model and in 2018 funded 4 co-production pilots and supported a fifth.

For one of these pilots, patients, members of the public, healthcare professionals and researchers planned a grant application to explore whether intensive gum treatment still improves diabetes control and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease from type 2 diabetes when provided in the community.

Another pilot co-produced a ‘sandpit event’ which sought to identify innovate ideas about how to improve communication between people with hearing loss and health and social care professionals.

The Centre started work in 2017, though its official launch will be in 2020. The aim of the pilot projects is to establish what works and what doesn’t when co-producing research and to feed all of this learning back into the development of the Centre.

Application details for the second round of pilot projects are in the latest UCL Centre for Co-production blog.
