Media spotlight on clinic where researchers seek to understand ‘Long Covid’

UCLH’s novel long Covid-19 clinic was featured on BBC News and ITV News this week.

NHS England CEO Sir Simon Stevens visited the clinic – where researchers look at the long term impacts of Covid-19 and test new care strategies – when he announced an extra £10m in local funding for Long Covid clinics to be established in every area in England.

The UCLH team see a mix of post-hospital and community-managed patients who have ongoing issues following COVID-19. The clinic has been led by integrated respiratory physicians with input from physiotherapy, infection doctors, psychology, cardiologists and neurologists.

Researchers hope to recruit patients to the PHOSP-COVID (Post-Hospital Covid) study which will be using advanced imaging, data collection and analysis of blood and lung samples to build up a comprehensive picture of the impact COVID-19 on longer term health outcomes across the UK.

The study team will then test new strategies for clinical care, including personalised treatments for groups of patients based on particular disease characteristics.

The UCLH portion of PHOSP-COVID will be led by Infectious Diseases consultant Dr Michael Marks, and supported by the BRC. PHOSP-COVID is a national study led by the University of Leicester.
