UCL global network to keep academics in touch

UCL has launched a global networking initiative called ‘Academics Need to Talk’ encouraging video discussions between academics so they continue working, talking and building relationships during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Colby Benari, Head of the Academic Careers Office, UCL, which is supported by the BRC, said: “Academics Need to Talk was developed to support the global academic community at a time when we are all feeling isolated, uncertain and sometimes lacking purpose.

“By giving academics around the world and in any discipline the opportunity to connect by video or voice calls, Academics Need to Talk enables them to support each other through this crisis.”

Professor David Lomas, Vice-Provost (Health) said: “UCL has an absolute commitment to collaboration. This global crisis is exactly the sort of critical challenge that can only be tackled by working together to best utilise the knowledge and wisdom generated by our researchers.

“We need to keep talking and working together. I am delighted to see UCL taking a lead in supporting and enabling academics during this difficult period”

The network, which has been supported by both NIHR and BRC funding, is open to all, regardless of subject-specialism, institution or where they are in the world.

It is easy for academics to take part. They just need to sign up for a Calendly account and then follow the instructions on the UCL Academic Careers Office website.

As well offering the opportunity to forge new collaborations, the network will provide virtual support to colleagues and offer advice on working remotely.
