UCL researcher gets NIHR professorship for promising leaders

Professor Anne Schilder from UCL is one of eight of the UK’s most promising leaders in medical health research to be awarded a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) professorship.

Each professor will receive around £1.5m of funding to conduct research into conditions that affect millions of patients across the UK.

Professor Schilder’s work will look at leading a programme of clinical trials across the UK to test and evaluate new and current treatments in ear, nose and throat (ENT) problems, such as dizziness, hearing loss and sinus and ear infections.

Professor Schilder, who joined UCL in June last year and is the ENT Clinical Trials Programme Director, said: “I think it’s fantastic that the NIHR has recognised the importance of improving our understanding of ENT conditions and how best to treat them. The grant will enable me and my team to establish this research programme and increase the capacity to generate research-based evidence that will help patients benefit from the very best treatments in the field.”

Professor Schilder and Professor James Bainbridge, also from UCL, were two of four new NIHR research professors in London selected by an international panel of independent experts.

Next round of professorships

The second round of the competition, with up to five NIHR Research Professorships available, is now open and nominations are invited from universities and NHS organisations in England. The aim is to fund leaders in the early part of their careers to lead research and enable them to spend a fixed 5-year period dedicated to translational research at Professorial level.

Each award will consist of a package to support a professorship, a post-doctoral appointment, research running costs, a travel fund, access to the NIHR Leadership Programme, and the opportunity for a sabbatical, as well as the basic salary costs of the individual plus indirect costs.

Deadline for nominations is 3 April 2012. Further details can be found at www.nihrtcc.nhs.uk
