Medical science meets history

Medical science meets history in the first of a series of evening BRC talks linking science to UCL’s unique archive of rare books and manuscripts.

In this first talk on medical imaging, the audience will be able to view an original copy of the influential 16th century textbook on anatomy De humani corporis fabrica (On the fabric of the human body) by Andreas Vesalius (1543) and touch and look through newer translations.  Guest speakers include Prof Margaret Hall-Craggs (UCL Centre for Medical Imaging), Prof Adam Gibson (UCL Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering) and Prof Mark Lythgoe (UCL Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging). They will be exploring what is new and showstopping in the world of medical imaging, the development of MRI and how (and why) a foetal laporoscope was used to interrogate a pop-up copy of De humani corporis fabrica

Future events will feature the breath taking Robert Carswell Illustrations (1827-1838) and, on display for the first time, the RNTNE History of Sign Language collection.

All events are open to all with wine, soft drinks and nibbles provided.

The first talk on imaging is at the UCL Haldane Room, WC1E 6BT on Monday 14 October. Get your ticket via Eventbrite.
